"I Can’t Complain"

So, on my way to church, I was just starting to listen to The Choir’s new CD, “O How The Mighty Have Fallen” and within the first 15 seconds I knew that inspiration had hit. I had a verse by the time I got to church. About 5 minutes later I had a catchy chorus. After church, while helping tear down, I had a bridge and chord progressions. Later that day, during a short break in my day, I decided I needed a second verse. I got that, played what I had, and went on my way for evening service rehearsal. By the time I got to church again I had written the final lyrics (of course they’ll need a little massaging as time goes on). So this whole song was written in a period between 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Since this is a blog and not a jukebox, you’ll not have the opportunity to appreciate this song for all it is, the whimsical melody being the best part. But here it is anyway…

I have cause to cry myself to sleep at night
And good reason to expect some pain tomorrow
I could say that everything will be alright
But I’m looking everywhere for hope to borrow

I’ve been here many times before
I know the twists and turns
Behind every painful door
There’s something to be learned

So I can’t complain, I can’t complain about it
I can’t complain, but I could do without it
If you ask me how I’m doing, I’m not faring well
But I can’t complain

I have seen you with your head low looking lonely
And I can’t help but remember me that way
I had thought that I had found my one and only
But it turns out we both went our separate ways

I’ve been there many times before
We all will get our turn
Tell me what is heartache for
If not so we can learn

So I can’t complain, I can’t complain about it
I can’t complain, but I could live without it
If you ask me how I’m doing, only time will tell
But I can’t complain

I treasure every longing moment
The promise in the pain
I have found my heart’s contentment
Mercy is my claim

So I can’t complain, I can’t complain about it
I can’t complain, but I will go without it
When you ask me how I’m doing, I hope I hide it well
Cause I can’t complain, I can’t complain
I won’t complain
